WEBINAR: Urban C-ITS Deployments

On September 26th 2024, the second international C-ITS webinar organised by C-Roads, titled “Urban C-ITS Deployments,” successfully brought together around 250 participants from 32 countries. The event showcased various cities that have implemented C-ITS in urban environments, highlighting that C-ITS is not just a concept but a reality actively being deployed in cities today.

Introduction

The webinar began with a brief introduction from Martin Böhm, Secretary General of the European C-Roads Platform, who emphasized the successful deployment of C-ITS on motorways and the importance of shifting focus to urban areas. He highlighted that collaboration among stakeholders is essential for the effective implementation of C-ITS. Currently, 21 European countries are engaged in deploying C-ITS, with 54 cities connected through the C-Roads Platform. The platform acts as a collaborative network for road authorities and infrastructure operators, fostering integration and enhancing the effectiveness of C-ITS across urban landscapes.

KEY PRESENTATIONS AND INSIGHTS

João Montenegro - Urban Deployment Group

João Montenegro provided insights into the Urban C-ITS Group of the C-Roads Platform, which focuses on assisting city authorities interested in deploying C-ITS in urban areas. To gain insights on urban C-ITS deployment status, the working group collected data from several cities concerning their expectations of C-ITS, use cases, and deployment stages, among other factors. The data analysis showed that the most implemented use cases and services among cities include In-Vehicle Signage, Road Works Warnings, and Signalized Intersections. Regarding notifications for hazardous locations, warnings about traffic jams ahead and adverse weather conditions were identified as the most important. This presentation highlighted the progress cities are making in C-ITS implementation and underscores the importance of continued collaboration and innovation in this field.

Eric Monceyron - Bordeaux

Eric Monceyron gave insights into the deployment of C-ITS in Bordeaux, presenting key statistics about the city and discussing how the solution of C-ITS addresses the challenges of congestion. He showcased the deployment site on the ring road, which experiences significant traffic congestion, and introduced the C-ITS App On-board Traffic CC, designed for large-scale and quick deployment. He emphasized the benefits of this approach for urban environments and explained how C-ITS enhances traffic efficiency. Additionally, he shared important feedback collected from Bordeaux regarding the implementation.

RiCcardo Lesca - Torino

Riccardo Lesca showcased C-ITS deployments in Torino, outlining the roadmap from C-ITS, which began before 2016 and is currently planned to extend until 2028. He presented the first set of services that were part of the C-Roads Italy 2 project and offered an overview of the ITS-G5 stations and signalized intersections currently deployed within the city. Additionally, he highlighted Torino's plans for the upcoming years to incorporate more use cases, roadside units, and signalized intersections. This emphasis underscores the growing importance of C-ITS for the city.

Bernd Schober - Hamburg

Bernd Schober gave a presentation on C-ITS deployments in the city of Hamburg, focusing on the prioritization of public transport. The goal is to enhance the appeal of using public transport by leveraging C-ITS to increase its reliability. Currently, 20% of traffic lights in Hamburg are equipped with bus prioritization features based on C-ITS, and there are approximately 180 roadside units deployed throughout the city. He demonstrated how the bus prioritization system works and outlined the C-ITS deployment plans extending to 2030, which include expanding traffic light prioritization for buses and emergency vehicles. Additionally, there are plans to integrate autonomous on-demand shuttles into the overall system.

Karl Rehrl - SALZBURG

Karl Rehrl provided insights into C-ITS deployments in Salzburg, highlighting the city's use of C-ITS for multiple purposes, including establishing direct communication channels with road users, facilitating interaction between infrastructure and vehicles, and granting direct access to vehicle data. He showcased all the roadside C-ITS stations currently operated in Salzburg, with a focus on intersections. He presented various implemented use cases, detailing three of them: the Road Works Warning Use Case, which is crucial in situations involving closed lanes; the Emergency Vehicle Approaching, which alerts drivers to oncoming emergency vehicles; and the Probe Vehicle Data Use Case, which utilizes roadside units located before and after roadworks to collect data on speed levels and resulting delays. Additionally, he mentioned that two winter maintenance vehicles are equipped with onboard units that send out warnings to other drivers about their own slow speed during salting or snow plug operations. This comprehensive approach underscores Salzburg's commitment to enhancing traffic management and safety through C-ITS.
